Who We Are
The Boulder County Hazmat Authority was officially formed in October of 2017 to streamline and enhance hazardous materials response across the county. The Authority is comprised of the 11 Designated Emergency Response Agencies (DERAs) located within Boulder County. All DERAs contribute to the funding of the Authority, while six agencies also contribute personnel and equipment.
Those contributing agencies are:
• Boulder Fire Department
• Longmont Fire Department
• Mountain View Fire Protection District
• Lafayette Fire Department
• Louisville Fire Protection District
• Boulder Rural Fire Protection District
While the Authority was formally established in 2017, the team’s roots date back to 1986 with the formation of the original Hazardous Materials Team. The founding members included Mountain View Fire Protection District, Longmont Fire Department, and the former Cherryvale Fire Protection District.
Today, the Boulder County Hazmat Authority is recognized as a Type 1 Hazmat Team with first response vehicles strategically located in Boulder, Longmont, Lafayette, and Dacono. Personnel are available to respond 24/7/365, and the team includes 85 certified Hazmat Technicians.
The Authority is overseen by a five-member Board of Directors, with representation from Mountain View Fire, Longmont Fire, Boulder Fire, Lafayette Fire, and the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office.
Operational oversight is provided by an Advisory Committee, which includes representatives from Longmont Fire, Boulder Fire, Mountain View Fire, Lafayette Fire, Louisville Fire, Boulder Rural Fire, and the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office.
